Abandoned Pets

Who we are?

The Abandoned Pets Portugal, as an association, born from the need to institutionalize pets protection activity, which had long been developed by a group of citizens. This activity, focused initially on stray and abandoned animals (especially animals accommodated in the old municipal kennel of Braga, and then, at the time, subject to slaughter) it was subjected to strong constraints, only surmountable with the institutionalization, in order to ensure the achievement of our goals.

So on May 8, 2013, in the Commercial Registry of Braga, it was founded Abandoned Pets, Association for Animal Dignity – S.O.S – ADOPTING.

Subjacent its creation, it is a Dignification Project Animal that goes far beyond the traditional removal of street or kennel animals, promoting their adoption. The experience of the day-to-day, lived often in dramatic conditions, gave us the awareness that the real paradigm shift will only occur with the change of mentalities and cultural tradition of a broad spectrum of our population, which continues, for example, to consider normal to have a chained animal to a deckhouse confined to a 1 meter room to move.

Aware of this reality, we are investing increasingly heavily in public awareness, especially targeting children and young people.

It is essential that major problems such as animal overpopulation, the number of animals slaughtered in the kennels of our country (about 100,000 a year), the high number of abandoned animals (about 20,000 per year) and the thousands of dead animals on Portuguese roads be solved through the awareness of people and the general population.

Currently, our practical work area is in rescue abandoned dogs from the street and the Braga Official Collect Center (old slaughter kennel). All animals rescued are welcomed in host families or more frequently in canine hotel, when we have sponsorship for them. All are vaccinated and dewormed and whenever we have aids, sterilized.

The current Braga Official Collect Center (CROB) was the old Braga kennel, not being now a slaughter kennel, has now 32 boxes for dogs and 20 boxes for cats. The Animals nowadays are not slaughtered unless they are aggressive and bite. The food for the animals is provided by the Braga Municipal Council, and the animals are well fed. The municipal veterinarian will start with some sterilizations, but it is not known how and when this will be done. We have been working together with CROB, the city of Braga and the municipal veterinarian in the dissemination of animals that are in CROB (Braga Official Collect Center) and our animals in order to find adopters for these animals, dissemination that is made through certain events such as “Cãominhadas” (Cão – Dog; Caminhadas – Hiking) and fairs and exhibitions that take place in our city.

The Canine Hotel we work with is the “CANISA”, that in addition to the hotel is a Canine Training Center. The dog trainer who works with this hotel also helps us in behavioral rehabilitation of some dogs that need as well as helping us with their training.

Our main goals are to help as many animals as possible, to be collected, rehabilitated, well fed and to provide the necessary and appropriate health care for them, but, our ultimate goal is to find a home for every dog that cross the path of our association, because we strongly believe that all animals deserve a second chance to be happy in a new home … !!!
